It is often said that one does not know how much something means to them until they lose it. Relating to a recent launch of the Harlequin Hotels and Resorts Marquis Estate in St Lucia, the famous line can appropriately be adapted to; a person hardly appreciates the beauty, intrigue and charm of their own island until foreign investors start appreciating it for them.

On Wednesday, Harlequin Hotels held a first-rate launching of their St Lucian Marquis Estate property; an exceptional undertaking for which investors have high expectations. The event was held at the newly established Cap Maison property in Cap Estate and was attended by elite invites, Harlequin executives and government officials.

David Ames, chairman of Harlequin Hotels and Resorts was the first speaker of the event and made it known that Harlequin was all about emphasizing the five-star hotel experience. He said Harlequin had already started showing people in the Caribbean what they were all about.

“We try to put together a partnership that works with the countries as well, and the people who live in the islands,” said Harlequin’s chairman. “The important thing is that you make money and also share the rewards of what you put together.”

The 500-acre Harlequin Marquis Estate property is expected to open its doors in 2014 and is one of four other Harlequin Caribbean properties. The Las Canas Beach Resort and the Two Rivers Beach Resort both in the Dominican Republic, Merrick’s Beach Resort in Barbados and Buccament Bay Beach in St Vincent and the Grenadines are all included in Harlequin portfolio of Caribbean Resorts.

“You can look at all the brochures but nothing can possibly tell you how special St Lucia is until you’re witnessing it for yourself. [The view from the property] whet my appetite in wanting to help David with the Soccer academy of course,” said Andy Townsend, who was a guest speaker at the event. Townsend, an Irish former professional footballer who played in two World Cups for the Republic of Ireland and also for the Chelsea football team and later, Aston Villa, was speaking of the Harlequin Sports Academy, a key feature of all resorts.

“It’s really cemented my commitment,” said Townsend. “When complete I genuinely feel this resort will be the finest there is. I’m quite honoured to be involved.”

All resorts will feature a premiership football club football academy as well as the Pat Cash Tennis Academy. In addition to giving individual and group lessons, the tennis academy will host pro-celebrity tournaments throughout the year as well as Wimbledon champion Pat Cash coaching clinics. Harlequin will also feature a cricket academy that is expected to encourage youngsters to learn game skills in a fun environment and a signature Gary Player golf course in St Lucia making the property the first in the Caribbean to include a Player designed
golf hotel.

Chairman of Harlequin Hotels and Resorts, David Ames, says his chain works with the people who live in the islands where they develop properties.

“We firmly believe that Harlequin is going to be one of our strongest partners going forward,” said Townsend. “There’s an obvious great deal of talent in the Caribbean, hopefully having a world class facility will help attract some of these people to St Lucia.”

At Wednesday’s launch Jonathan Kane from Liverpool Football Club presented footballers from the Babonneau Secondary School with official Liverpool football training jerseys. The Liverpool Football Club and Harlequin have already signed an agreement to open Liverpool FC Soccer Schools at each of Harlequin’s Caribbean Resorts.

St Lucia’s tourism minister Allen Chastanet said at the event that the demand to invest in St Lucia had not faltered and expressed the government’s commitment to making St Lucia a premier destination. Prime Minister Stephenson King said he was eagerly awaiting the commencement of the project, but left a subtle warning for developers. As Marquis Estate in the north east of St Lucia was “truly virgin territory,” King said the area required “meticulous development and cautious planning that was in keeping with the dreams and aspirations of our people.”

“So far see you’re putting together a project St Lucians will be proud of,” said the prime minister.

St Lucia readies to welcome Cruise Tourism delegates!

L-R: Tourism Director Louis Lewis, Digicel’s Keigan Cox, Tourism Minister Allen Chastanet, Cox and Company’s Matthew Beaubrun and Sky Ride’s Hugh Pilgrim at a press conference yesterday to name the official sponsors of the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association conference.

On its website the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association writes in a press release about the upcoming hosting of the FCCA Conference and Trade Show here in Saint Lucia: “With its natural beauty, St Lucia seems like an island plucked from the South Pacific and set down in the Caribbean. More than 1000 cruise industry partners will come together with 100 cruise executives from the FCCA member lines to share ideas and discuss industry trends. Executives from the FCCA member lines will once again host a series of roundtable discussions in the areas of Marketing, Shore Excursions and Operations. As executives share their expertise and offer ideas for the future, delegates will have the opportunity to participate during the question and answer session allowing for an interactive and informative series of workshops.”

It is this meeting of the minds of some of the most powerful and influential decision makers in the cruise industry that Senator Allen Chastanet, Minister of Tourism, is hoping will bring significant benefits to Saint Lucia. “More than 80 percent of these delegates are coming here for the first time and it is only through an event of this nature that we would be able to get there all here at once,” Chastanet said.

On Wednesday October 14, the Saint Lucia Tourist Board hosted a press conference to announce the local partners for the hosting of the annual FCCA conference and trade show which takes place here October 26-30. The event was held at Palm Haven Hotel at Rodney Bay with heads of main sponsors Digicel, Cox and Company Ltd and Sky Rides in attendance.

In his opening remarks Louis Lewis, director of the SLTB saw the hosting of the FCCA conference as a milestone even though, he admitted, that he was somewhat apprehensive at first, his main concern being the cost and how to excite partners to participate.

“Today I am happy that the sponsors have seen the benefit of Saint Lucia hosting this event, bringing about a very good public sector private sector partnership. I am sure this is also the manifestation of the recognition of the importance of this event to the destination and the potential benefit that we can derive as a cruise ship destination of the tourism industry,” Lewis says.

Country Manager for Digicel Keigan Cox told the gathering Wednesday; “it is certainly a pleasure for Digicel to be associated with this event particular with the importance of cruise tourism,” quoting statistics of close to 7,000 cruise ship passengers passing through Saint Lucia so far this year. “Digicel’s involvement is quite costly and intricate in that Digicel is providing a state of the art telecom service to facilitate the FCCA conference. This will include a wireless internet service which will support over 2,000 users at that one event,” Cox revealed. “And so we are proud to be involved and this continues a relationship with SLTB which started over a year ago so it is a pleasure being on board with the FCCA Conference.”

As the premiere Sky Ride and forest tour on the island, the Sky Ride Company is also proudly associated with the conference noting that most of their business comes from cruise ship passengers. This fact was also highlighted by Matthew Beaubrun of Cox and Company another sponsor. “It is a tremendous opportunity for us in Saint Lucia to take advantage and really grow the industry even bigger and bigger,” Beaubrun stated. “The cruise sector is really a critical part of the tourism sector in Saint Lucia and a lot of tour sites would not survive without the cruise sector so it is really a partnership with the land base, a partnership with the government, the authorities, the private sector. We at Cox and Company are very happy to be a sponsor and we will be involved in ground handling for delegates, the VIP and red cap services.”

Minister Allen Chastanet, who was the last to speak Wednesday said that the person who he had to thank first for the hosting of the FCCA was Prime Minister Stephenson King as he had a meeting with the FCCA in terms of encouraging them to look at Saint Lucia.

“I know a lot of people believe that we stole the event from Guatemala, that certainly was not the case. In fact FCCA had already made the decision to leave Guatemala and in fact they were looking for a new destination. At the Prime Minister’s conversation with the FCCA they indicated that the first choice was Dominican Republic since they were scheduled to host the following year, but they declined and Saint Lucia saw the opportunity at expressed interest,” Chastanet says. Apart from most of the money being spent on FCCA staying here through catering, tours, entertainment and taxes, the tourism minister says there are also many other benefits for the island. Among them he says the island will build its resume, which started with the hosting of CHA marketplace earlier this year. There will also be the opportunity he says to encourage the cruise ships to spend more time in Saint Lucia and to look at Vieux Fort and Soufriere as two other ports. In fact the FCCA delegates will be hosted by the Soufriere Regional Development Foundation for an entire day in an effort to sell some of their ideas and of course expose them to true Saint Lucian hospitality.

The 16th annual FCCA Conference and trade show will take place October 26-30 at the Almond Smugglers Cove and will cost the Saint Lucia Tourist Board EC$4.5 million with just over EC$500,000 in sponsorship coming in to offset that cost.
