Young Mecca aka Mr Keen Cotter

May 22, 2009

whatIt all began in December 1997 when the “underground mixtape king”, DJ Grinch, stumbled upon raw talent possessed by a fourteen year old rapper growing up in an affluent St. Lucian community of musicians, singers and songwriters. He called himself Young Mecca. His talents and abilities were quickly noticed by many, thus propelling his meteoric rise. The national radio stations regularly featured his debut single “Punk Daddy” which was recorded and released in September of 1998. Since then he has been releasing mixtapes and number one singles every year and on January 24th 2007, Mecca released “Catch Me If You Can” which received over 3,000 downloads in its first nine days of availability.
Young Mecca has opened for regional and international acts such as Elephant Man, Rupee and Khia. And, now in his early twenties, this prolific rapper and songwriter paints vivid pictures with lyrics and music like a modern day Picasso and delivers his inspirational messages ever so sweetly through his unique vocal expressions. Mecca has added a new twist to a Hip-Hop genre that already contains some Caribbean genes. His culturally influential style has permitted him to make Hip-Hop his own by fusing various musical styles together with his dynamic swagger, allowing him to create a secure place for himself in a very competitive market.

Young Mecca’s witty mannerisms of communicating even the simplest sentences with the use of metaphors, punch-lines and other figures of speech have got him praise by many who appreciate good, well put together lyrics. Though every musical piece is different, it is quite evident that Mecca’s artistry is “real” and his voice, flow and musical style is prominent on every track that he produces, thus making way for him to stand out among the cluster of Hip-Hop artists known.

As an individual growing up with dreams of becoming a musical icon, Mecca has acquired many skills to help propel him in achieving his goals. He has every intention of succeeding in whatever he does and will not be stopped until he obtains his every desire. With Wyclef Jean as his main inspiration, Mecca, this hard working and determined individual with enormous talent is truly worth looking out for.

st-lucia-carnival-iiiThe event included calpyso and soca performances and a display of costumes.

Additions in Dennery Carnival involves the reintroduction of the Calypso competition alongside the Dennery Carnival Queen Pageant.

Executive Director of the Cultural Development Foundation, Mr.Kennedy Samuel says that he is hoping that this year’s carnival is bigger and better. Mr. Samuel notes that this year a record number of 15 bands will be taking part in this parade.

Meantime, some members of the public have once again registered the disapproval with what they describe as unprecedented skimpy outfits for this year’s carnival.

Atleast three bands have had their launching, showing off the customes on display. Some have noted that the costumes have gotten even worse and have called on the relevant authorities to put certain standards in place. Some have also noted that carnival is constantly losing its creativity.
